One of the Pacific Northwest’s trending wine categories is GSM — a blend of Rhone varieties Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Kirkland vintner Robert Delf asked acclaimed winemaker Robert Smasne to come up with a recipe, and this one definitely came together beautifully. It’s Mourvèdre (62%), Grenache (24%) and Syrah from Yakima Valley sites Art den Hoed and Upland as well as Canyon Canyon in the Horse Heaven Hills. It starts with aromas of cherry chola, blackberry and red plum, followed by a dusting of cinnamon, pizza spice and minerality. Inside there’s an abundant and elegant delivery of boysenberry, blackberry and huckleberry, bringing a good mix of juicy acidity and green tea tannin.
